The BULGARIAN-AMERICAN FULBRIGHT COMMISSION was officially established on 9 February 1993. It is a binational commission run by a Board, consisted of 5 American and 5 Bulgarian citizens. They all represent main state and social activities such as: management, education, culture, art and business. The American ambassador and the Bulgarian Minister of Education and Science are honoured co-chairmen.
The main source of funding of Fulbright are the US government grants on an annual basis. The total amount of which is $600,000, and from 2009 the Bulgarian government awards $140,000 annually for the increasing of the Programme’s budget.
Since 2010 the America for Bulgaria Foundation has been generously supporting the expansion of the programme for teaching assistants in English language.
The Commission’s general function originates directly from Fulbright’s aims. The goal is to administrate the academic exchange of Bulgarian and foreign scientists, experts, students, teaching assistants and professionals, as well as to spread some information on education opportunities, science researches and teaching in the USA.

Programmes:
- Fulbright’s Annual Scholarship Competition for Bulgarian students, scientists, professionals and representatives of nonprofit organizations who want to specialize in their occupations, teach and carry out some researches in the USA.
- Fulbright Programme – America for Bulgaria Foundation – looking for teaching assistants in English from the USA. The programme gives Bulgarian state and municipal schools with intensive English language learning courses access to native speakers and innovative methods of teaching, which encourage the improvement of students’ communication skills.
- A free 5 year distance learning programme, an advisory programme designated for the preparation of students in 8,9,10,11 or 12 grade who want to apply to a university through institutional funding granted by American colleges and universities. Students can take part in the programme by submitting their names, grade, school and city to staneva@fulbright.bg .
- Opportunity Funds – scholarships for 11 grade students who want to apply to American universities and study in the USA. The contest runs from the end of every calendar year to mid-January.
