University of London is different from the rest of the universities, it consists of 18 autonomous colleges and 10 research centers. Royal Holloway was founded in 1886, received its status from the University of London in 1900, and later merged with Bedford College. Although part of the University of London, it is within walking distance of the capital, in Egham, Surrey, which gives students a sense of space and tranquility. The campus is spread over 54 hectares, being located just a few steps from Windsor Great Park.

The dominant building, called the Founder Building, is a Victorian copy of the Chambord Castle on the Luarei Valley. Royal Holloway is recognized as one of the top research-intensive universities in the UK, being well ranked in Research Assessment Exercise. The rating system for RAE evaluation covers the quality of research in four categories, the maximum score being 4 *, indicating quality to the highest standards in terms of originality, importance / applicability and rigor.

Royal Holloway is ranked 16th in the UK for research at a 4 * level. The Times Good University Guide, The Complete University Guide, The Guardian University Guide and The Sunday Times Good University Guide also rank the university among the top 35 universities in the UK in terms of academic excellence.
